February 7, Fishing

Like I need another hobby, but I do.  Andrew and I went striper fishing (I had two p's until I noticed my error.  That would look good, preacher hiring a professional to catch a stripper for his son) with Brian Kelly out of Anderson last year and caught a bunch of big stripers.  I was instantly hooked.  I've since fished with Brian on a number of occasions and love it more each time.  I've learned a great deal from Brian on how to catch stripers.  He is always very patient to answer all my questions on how to find and catch fish.

Here is the problem, I've been fishing at least twelve times during the course of the last four or five months and have caught three stinking stripers.  I go to the same places, use the same bait, copied the techniques of the pro and still can't catch fish.

I thought it was because I didn't have a boat as good as Brian's.  I've since become good friends with Corey Drennon who has a boat just like my guides and has all the equipment.  I used it last Saturday and fished from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm and never caught one fish.  It was an awesome day because I spent all that time with my son Andrew and it was 62 degrees.  But still no fish.

As I was sitting in the boat last Saturday somewhat perturbed, God whispered quietly into my ear, "Dean, I called you to catch men and not fish."

Matthew 4:18-20
As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. [19] "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will make you fishers of men." [20] At once they left their nets and followed him.

I'm not trying to make excuses for my pitifulness in striper fishing but I do realize what is more important.  I'd much rather see men giving their life to Christ verses pulling in a fish.

One more thought, every time I go striper fishing with a professional I catch fish.  Every time I fish for men my guide is standing beside me giving me the words needed.  He has been teaching me the technique, showing me what bait to use and the places he wants me to go.  My goal in life is to fill the boat with men.

I am going striper fishing again in the morning just because I enjoy it.  Doubt I catch anything but it'll be fun!
