May 23, Memorial Day

Memorial Day weekend
Everyone looks forward to Memorial Day - the unofficial start of summer. Warmer weather and vacations are just around the corner.
With our brave young men and women fighting and dying in Iraq each day, the true purpose of Memorial Day is more obvious than ever. This is the day to remember servicemen and women, past and present, who fight for our country.
On May 5, 1868, Memorial Day was officially declared by Gen. John A.Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. The first observance was held at Arlington National Cemetery on May 30, 1868, as a way to honor solders who died in the Civil War. Flowers were placed on the graves. The day later became an observance to honor all war dead.
I'm not sure how you feel about the war in Iraq. To be honest, I really don't care. Regardless your feelings you gotta support the men and women fighting for you. As you receive a paid holiday in their honor, as you relax and enjoy the day without fear of being attacked, think of them. Take a moment out of your day and pray for their safety.
Personally, I pray for them regularly. I pray for our existing president and the newly elected president. And I pray for a true spiritual awakening in this country. One in which church and unchurched people alike will be broken over their sin.
And yes, I do pray that America will be "one nation under God" once again.
