August 11, Head on collision
Jacob and I were riding home in the jeep Sunday after lunch (bad choice of vehicles on a 100 degree day) heading home. We came to our exit and noticed there were five pr six state troopers parked everywhere. As I came to a stop sign one trooper was directing traffic. He was screaming at a woman who was rubber necking and had literally come to a stop while in the flow of traffic. The person behind her almost hit her.
Picture this with me. In order for us to get home you must turn right off the exit and make an immediate left. You only go 15 feet before turning. You can almost go straight if there is no on coming traffic. There were at least 10 cars lined down the road because the woman had stopped right in front of the stop sign rubber necking. Guess that is why the trooper was so upset, as he had the right to be.
I'm sitting at our exit (the stop sign) waiting for her to move. As she went by the trooper waved us on. I turned to the right and began my immediate turn to the left. Remember, I can't see my lane because of all the traffic sitting at the stop sign. All I'm doing is following the directions of the state trooper directing traffic. As I get around the first vehicle sitting at the stop sign across from me, I am met with an oncoming car (at a high rate of speed) in my lane. I swerve and he tries to lock it up. If I hadn't just done a message on the mouth I may have cussed at him. Or another reason could be that it was another state trooper.
He had decided since there was so much traffic in his lane he would just borrow mine. Usually not a big deal. But in this case there is a 20 - 30 foot drop off 4 feet of pavement. Now I'm swerving a state trooper in my lane and have a severe drop off to my right. I kid you not, we missed by only inches.
Moral of the story. I wasn't rubber necking. I was watching my lane. If I had been looking for whatever all the commotion was about, there would have been another wreck. (I'm not sure how, but it probably would have been my fault, even though he was in my lane)
Life is the same way. It doesn't take but one time to look the other direction or "Rubber neck" and Satan will cause a wreck in your life. He is waiting for you to take your eyes off Jesus. The Bible puts it this way:
1 Peter 5:8-9a
Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. [9] Resist him, standing firm in the faith,
Keep your eyes on the road that God has laid before you and don't allow distractions to steer you into the ditch.
