July 6, Random Thoughts
Since returning from Africa I haven't shared what is running through my head, so here we go. Don't let this scare you:
* Still thinking about the things I saw and experienced in Africa.
* We have 15 people who are willing to sponsor children in our orphanage and others who will sponsor the adults.
* With it being the 4th of July weekend I spent some time thinking about my country early one morning.
a. So thankful to live in this country
b. Does our country have its own issues and problems? Yes sir!
c. But, I'm so thankful to live right here in South Carolina.
d. Thankful for those who paved the road for America.
e. Thankful for the men and women who continue to fight for our freedom.
f. Wonder what our forefathers would think about America today?
g. As a pastor, there is great opportunity to excel in America.
* Working hard on upcoming series, "In the name of Love." Starts October 1st.
* Going to the jockey lot in the morning to shoot a video for the series.
* After five years of pastoring this church I've come to realize several things:
a. Our city needs a church willing to do whatever it takes to reach lost people.
b. Pastoring deals with so much more than preparing a message. In fact, that is the fun and easy part.
c. If you're not a good leader, the church won't grow.
d. Loving the unloveables is tougher than I ever imagined.
e. I continue to hate talking about money but understand it must be done.
Not because the church needs money but because it is most peoples God.
f. Even though many churched people are offended by talking about sex, it must be done.
g. A pastor must have a good staff. Without it, its gonna be tough. Thankful for my staff.
h. People aren't mad at Jesus, just frustrated with the church.
i. I don't have all the answers. In fact, I'm 100% confident that god uses idiots to glorify himself.
Every time I look in the mirror I'm reassured of this.
j. I'm so thankful to be a part of church that allows me to be Dean Herman.
* I'm going to try and never say the following statement, "Dean Herman will never do......." Seems like I usually do.
* I promised God I'd get below 280. I did. In fact got down to 278. Since that time I've gained 12 pounds. So ashamed of myself. I can make a bunch of excuses but the reality is I did it myself. Have begun eating right and exercising again. So tired of this battle.
* So proud of Richard Johnson for going to Africa. Leaves is 13 days.
* I am so honored to do what God has called me to do and can't wait to reach this city.
