Dec 21, Why not Christmas

I've had several people ask why we're not having services on Christmas day and its a fair question.  So I thought I'd answer it.  Several reasons:
1. We have so many divorced families which causes a problem for Christmas morning.  Both sets of parents want to spend time with their kids on Christmas day.  So no matter what time we picked that excluded a lot of our people.  I realize no matter what time we chose it couldn't fit into everyone's schedule.
2. Our volunteers.  The majority of our volunteers have children.  We want them spending time with their kids on Christmas morning.  By having our services on Christmas Eve they can do this.
3. The thought of giving our volunteers a break excited me.  Enjoy Christmas morning.
4. I know what some people are saying, "I want to be in church on Christmas morning."  Let me ask you a question, will you come next year when Christmas is on a Monday, or the following on Tuesday etc.  And here is the truth, I will be worshiping Christmas morning just as I have always done since accepting Christ.  We never open a present until we read scripture and pray.  We thank god for the ultimate gift before tearing into our gifts, no matter what day Christmas falls on.
5. Personally, I want to spend time with my family celebrating Christ birth.  I look forward to my Grandsons opening their gifts at our house and that won't take place until 10 or 11, church time.  I look forward to having a great meal with family and whatever else happens that day.
6. I asked a lot of people what they thought about having services on Christmas Eve and the majority loved the idea.  Ran it by staff and prayed about it a bunch.  Result, having two services on Christmas eve at 4:00 and 5:30.  And I can promise you they are going to be good!  Can't wait1

Some other thoughts:
1. There are puddles in what used to be our parking lot.  It will be several weeks before they are done.  The walking will do most of us some good.  For those who are willing you can park across the tracks at city hall.
2. The church office will be closed next week.  I plan on enjoying this warm weather by spending some time on the lake.
3. Please look for opportunities to serve others, especially during this time of year.
4. Our next series will be "Shocking statement of Jesus Christ."  We will be looking at some of the things Christ said that make us say, "did he really say that?"
5.  Can't wait to see what 2011 holds for 5 Point.
6. I will be making a major announcement Saturday evening.
See you then
