Feb 9, Who we are part 3
Saving the best for last! 5 Point is a church on a mission to reach lost people. Everything we do and try to do is to reach those far from God. My heart beats to reach lost people. How do we do that? Several ways:
We do everything we can to make the unchurched feel welcome.
I can hear some people now. "Yeah, you're willing to bring in Hooter girls and serve beer and pizza and call it a worship service." Let's be serious and practical. We're willing to do anything Christ was willing to do such as:
a. use terms that won't scare people off - "washed in the blood" I never say that. People think about the movie Carrie. And let me everyone in on a secret, JESUS NEVER SAID THAT! It is a man term. I talk about the cross all the time. Some other examples:
b. we don't have hard wooden pews to sit on (Praise God). I'm not putting down churches that do but church is the only place that type of seating exist.
c. we play very upbeat music. We have drums, guitars, key board and an occasional banjo. Not that I'm against traditional worship but it just isn't who we are. Our music is loud and proud.
d. I teach very simply. As I read through the gospels and how Christ taught I don't find him EVER using big fancy words. Christ was the most simplistic teacher ever. And in my opinion, the best. He used everyday analogies. If Christ we're here today he would talk about computers, have a cell phone, he would use twitter and blog. That is the world we live in. I also try and teach the Bible so that people can leave and apply it to their daily life. I love Paul and his missionary journeys. But I've never done a series on Paul's three missionary journeys. They are ever so important, but lost people, hurting people, broke people could care less. They need to hear how Christ can change their life today.
e. I make sure everyone knows our church is full of screwed up people starting with the Pastor. EVERYONE is welcome at 5 Point. From the gossip to the town prostitute. Jesus never turned anyone away and neither do we.
f. If an event doesn't help draw in people far from God we seldom do it.
Our vision is to reach the unchurched so we base everything we do around it. On MANY occasions people have come to me and said, "why don't we start a ______ ministry?" Response is always the same, "can we reach more people through that event?"
g. Evangelism is taught and encouraged from the stage, staff and leaders.
Everyone knows that this church is all about reaching the unchurched. It's our DNA. and it is lead by the Pastor. So many churches seldom see people come to know Christ because they're never taught how to and the Pastor doesn't lead the way. I will talk about Jesus to anyone. It is my DNA.
Some other thoughts:
* I am so jacked up about Sunday. This weeks shocking statement is going to mess a bunch of folks up. Can't wait to see what God is going to do.
* Helicopter ride may have been cancelled. Broke down today. I'm good with waiting to make sure it is running good. Will know in a few minutes.
* Some AWESOME stuff is happening at 5 Point. So blessed to be a part of a church that loves reaching those far from God.
* Had an all day staff meeting today. Truly love our staff. They have such a heart for Christ and this community. i am blessed to have them. Don't tell them I said that!
* Date night tonight with my family. Going out to dinner and hanging with my Grandsons. Those little fellows have me wrapped around their pinkie!
* Major announcement on Sunday. See you then!
Go tell someone what Jesus has done for you. It's who we are!
