Feb 15, How to be a "GODLY" Husband
This past Saturday night we had our first marriage enrichment session. 86 people came to see how they could improve their marriage. I used the teaching time to speak into the men. Talked about how we are to honor our wives according to scripture and not the world.
1 Peter 3:7
7 Husbands, likewise, dwell with them with understanding, giving honor to the wife, as to the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life, that your prayers may not be hindered.
How to honor our wives:
1. Honor your wife spiritually
Ephesians 5:25-31
a. lead the way in reading God's Word and praying
b. lead your family going to worship and get involved
c. hug your kids
d. Realize you are your families Pastor
2. Honor your wife physically
a. stay in shape so you can live and protect her. Understand that round is not the shape we should desire.
b. be protective of your wife. Let her know you have her back.
3. Honor your wife emotionally
we can say "I love you" all we want but until we're connected emotionally with our wives our marriage will never be what God the Father intended. Men must understand that its not womens fault. God created them this way. Goes all the way back to the Garden with the first couple. When Adam & Eve sinned God placed a curse on both of them.
Genesis 3:16
16 To the woman he said, "I will greatly increase your pains in childbearing; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you."
God placed in a woman's heart that she would desire her husband's love. It is our duty to fulfill that desire. We must connect emotionally.
4. Honor your wife verbally
Scripture is clear on this matter
Colossians 3:19 (NIV)
19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them.
I shudder to think of the times I've been harsh with Deb. Enough on this one before I get convicted all over again.
5. Honor your wife financially
1 Timothy 5:8
8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
I'm not talking to the guy who had the same job for 30 years and got laid off. I'm referring to the guy who still lives in his Mom's basement with his family and still doesn't have a job because the right one hasn't come along. You want respect from your family then get a job and support them. It's not the Governments job.
6. Honor your wife technologically
This needs to be done in at least three ways:
a. computer - I'm talking porn. Statistics prove that 49% of Christian homes have a problem with pornography. Stop it now and get some help.
b. tv - turn the stinking thing off and talk to your wife and kids.
c. cell phone - I am sick and tired of men spending every spare minute they have looking a phone screen. If I was your wife I'd tell you _______________ with that thing. Cut your phones off and spend some time with your bride.
To close the session I had men pray over their wives. Oh my gosh is all I can say. Men and women alike we're weeping. POWERFUL moment.
We will be meeting again on Saturday, March 10th and I will be speaking to the women. Men, I promise you your gonna want to be there!
